We often tend to think solely of our bodies when talking about being healthy. But we are more than just tissue and bones, so striving for good health as we age should be about taking care of our bodies <em>and <\/em>our minds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>September is Healthy Aging month, so it\u2019s the ideal time to focus some attention on your overall well-being and maybe make some healthy changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Move it!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The benefits of moving your body and staying as fit as possible are worth striving for. In addition to potentially adding years to your life, getting fit can:<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/devblog.foresters.com\/well-being\/exercise-and-diabetes-how-and-why-you-should-keep-moving\/\">reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes<\/a> <\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/devblog.foresters.com\/live-well\/improving-well-being\/how-to-keep-your-heart-healthy\/\">reduce your risk of coronary artery disease<\/a> <\/li><li>increase your bone density<\/li><li>reduce your risk of osteoporosis<\/li><li>improve your cardiovascular health<\/li><li>increase your strength and power<\/li><li>improve your posture and flexibility<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/devblog.foresters.com\/well-being\/balancing-act-how-to-improve-your-balance-as-you-age\/\">reduce your risk of falling<\/a> <\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/devblog.foresters.com\/well-being\/fight-inflammation-with-a-knife-and-fork\/\">help you manage your arthritis<\/a> <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The NHS advises that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/exercise\/physical-activity-guidelines-older-adults\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">regular physical activity<\/a> is one of the most important things you can do for your health as you age, but some physical activity is better than none at all \u2014 so do what you can with whatever your abilities and conditions will allow. Just remember to always check with your doctor before beginning any new exercise programme, particularly if you have underlying health conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Eat well<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being aware of what you put into your body is key to healthy aging too. Generally speaking, if you don\u2019t have any dietary restrictions, you should aim to ensure that your plate at each meal is half fruits and vegetables, a quarter whole grain foods and a quarter protein. It\u2019s also important to limit foods and beverages that are high in added sugars, saturated fat and sodium. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/eat-well\/the-eatwell-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NHS Eatwell Guide<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/food-guide.canada.ca\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canada Food Guide<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietaryguidelines.gov\/resources\/2020-2025-dietary-guidelines-online-materials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dietary Guide for Americans<\/a> offer helpful guidelines, resources and healthy recipe ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stay social<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies have shown that older people who have more frequent social activity have lower levels of disability in several areas.<sup>2<\/sup> That means they may be able to live independently longer than those who are less social. Not only that, staying connected may reduce the risk of Alzheimer\u2019s disease, cardiovascular problems, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis and some cancers \u2014 and can even boost your immune system.<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are so many great ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/devblog.foresters.com\/well-being\/living-independently-staying-socially-connected\/\">stay connected to those around you<\/a>, including reaching out to help others.
